Hug Point Elopement

Hug Point is one of the most popular elopement locations on the Oregon Coast. It's a beautiful stretch of beach just south of Cannon Beach where I photographed this intimate wedding earlier this fall.

Prior to the pandemic these two (who's proposal I shot last year) planned on getting married at Rossi Farms but as the Covid cases rose and guidelines continuously shifted, they made the decision to elope at Hug Point surrounded by just their parents. While it wasn't the friend and family filled wedding they had originally imagined, it turned into a beautiful and meaningful day that exceeded everyone’s expectations.

Weather leading up to their elopement day was forecasting rain all weekend long. We were ready for a wet weekend but constantly checking our phones and weather apps to see if there was any hope of sunshine. Saturday morning I woke early to a text from the couple that asked if I could be ready for a ceremony at 11am for a potential peak of sun. I was ready to go!

I met them at their hotel room at Stephanie Inn for some last minute getting ready moments and then headed down the road to Hug Point State Recreation Site. Moments later we were on the beach with their parents, under partly cloudy skies, ready to start their ceremony. Hug Point has a number of great ceremony locations to choose from whether you want a little forested grove that overlooks the beach below, craggy rocks to serve as an altar, or even a small coastal waterfall. We opted for an area of the beach that was closer to the parking lot to accommodate their parents.

As they exchanged their heartfelt vows with one another the sun peeked in and out from behind the clouds and eventually that rainy day that had been forecasted changed to a mostly sunny day that held on until the evening, proving that you never really know what the weather will do on the Oregon Coast.

Following their ceremony and some family portraits we strolled up and down the beach and took some fun couple portraits and enjoyed the late morning sun. We took an afternoon break before meeting back up for some evening portraits followed by a delicious dinner at The Bistro in Cannon Beach. The beauty of elopements is that you can take time and take the day at your own pace, having time to rest and relax in between the days festivities can be helpful for the couple and their guests alike.

This was such a beautiful Oregon Coast elopement to be part of and I'm so happy I could be there. I loved that I could be flexible and accommodate ever changing plans and weather to give these two the best and easiest photography experience possible.

Things to know about eloping at Hug Point

Below are a few things to consider while planning your elopement or small wedding at Hug Point State Recreation Site on the Oregon Coast.

Pick a weekday elopement date and get married off season

I highly recommend you plan your Hug Point elopement for a weekday (Monday through Thursday) to cut down on the number of beachgoers and visitors and ensure you have a more intimate and enjoyable wedding day. While I try my best to photoshop out distracting people in the background it's a lot easier to avoid this when the beach is emptier.

Perhaps the biggest incentive for picking a weekday is parking. The parking lot at Hug Point is small and fills up early and fast! On a summer weekend you can expect to find cars parked precariously and often illegally along Highway 101.

You probably don’t have to worry about sharks but you will have to worry about parking.

You probably don’t have to worry about sharks but you will have to worry about parking.

Check the tides and the weather forecast

Hug Point is a smaller section of beach and accessing certain areas like the caves can be difficult and dangerous depending on the time of year and the tide schedule. If you're planning a winter elopement on the Oregon Coast pay attention to when the King Tides are happening and avoid the beach.

Pockets of sunshine can happen at any time on the north Oregon Coast but you're most likely to get sun in the summer months of mid June through early September. These are also the busiest times for visitors.

do i need a permit to get married at hug point?

Probably not but check out my elopement guide for Cannon Beach or my resource on eloping in Oregon for more details about permits, state ceremony requirements, etc.

Abernethy Center Wedding

When these two first contacted me about their wedding at Abernethy Center in Oregon City I was super excited! I had been wanting to photograph a wedding there for awhile and I couldn’t wait for the day to come. Abernethy Center is more than just a wedding venue…it’s three of them! The venue is spread out over several blocks in historic Oregon City, OR and features 3 wedding ceremony sites and 3 reception areas making it possible for the venue to host more than one wedding in a day. The venue is also only a 24 minute drive from Downtown Portland.

Leading up to this wedding we weren’t too sure whether or not it was going to happen. Not only were we still in the midst of a pandemic but the wildfires nearby left Portland and most of Oregon smothered in smoke and hazardous air quality levels just a few days before their wedding date. But then the best wedding gift ever arrived! A small rainstorm helped clear the air one day before their wedding and left us with mostly clear skies and fresh air.

Veiled Garden Wedding Ceremony at Abernethy Center

Their ceremony took place in the Veiled Garden in front of a white gazebo surrounded by a lush Pacific Northwest background of trees and ferns. Normally this space can accommodate up to 300 wedding guests but these two stuck to health guidelines and kept their guests within their quarantine bubbles. While we lucked out with weather, the Veiled Garden can be paired with the classic white Abernethy Chapel in the event of rain.

Following their wedding ceremony their family and friends walked across the street to the Abernethy Ballroom. I love that within a short walk this wedding venue provides a beautiful ceremony location and an elegant indoor reception area without having to drive across town. Also, there is plenty of parking!

Abigail’s Garden Wedding Venue

One of the other outdoor ceremony options that Abernethy Center offers is Abigail’s Garden. It’s a great location for an all outdoor wedding in the summer. The ceremony location is an open green space with a beautiful gazebo framed by a weeping willow. Beyond the ceremony site there is a large wedding tent which features outdoor heaters and a wooden dance floor.

Portland’s Best Locations for Engagement Photos

It’s easy to find a beautiful location to take engagement photos in Portland. Located just a little under a 2 hour drive to the Oregon Coast or to the mountains, Portland is packed with scenic spaces, picking just one is where it gets difficult! Below is a list of some areas that I think are the best locations for engagement photos in and around Portland.

Photoshoot Locations in Portland

Powell Butte Nature Park

16160 SE Powell Blvd
Portland, OR 97236
Drive time from Downtown Portland: 32 minutes.

A natural refuge in the middle of urban sprawl that is SE Portland. I love Powell Butte because it combines my love of open meadows and forests all in one park. With a small amount of hiking it’s easy to put together a photo shoot that combines both of these microclimates in one session. Here are some engagement photos from a session at Powell Butte.

Washington Park

4033 SW Canyon Rd
Portland, OR 97221
Drive time from Downtown Portland: 5 minutes.

Washington Park is a favorite among tourists coming to Portland as it’s kind of a one stop shop for the city’s main attractions. The Oregon Zoo, Japanese Garden, Hoyt Arboretum, and the Rose Garden are all located within the park. The last two are great locations to consider for your Portland engagement photos.

Hoyt Arboretum has 189 of acres and 2300 tree species from all over the world making it easy to feel like your deep in the forest when you’re actually in the heart of the city.

By late Spring the International Test Rose Garden is exploding with colorful blooms and is a photographer’s wonderland.

Mt Tabor

SE 60th Avenue and Salmon Street
Portland, OR 97215
Drive time from Downtown Portland: 16 minutes.

This old volcano is one of my favorite spots in Portland to go for a neighborhood walk. The park is located in the middle of SE Portland and easy to get to. After your photo session you can grab a bite to eat at ¿Por Qué No? taqueria or a drink at Sapphire Hotel. This sessions is from a foggy fall morning but Mt Tabor is great any time of the year.

Cathedral Park

N Edison Street and Pittsburg Avenue
Portland, OR 97203
Drive time from Downtown Portland: 15 minutes.

Cathedral Park is located right under the historic span of the St. John’s Bridge. It gets its name from the gothic cathedral style bridge towers which make for not only a visually striking engagement photo but a great wedding venue too! The park is right on the banks of the Willamette River and a short walk to the St Johns neighborhood in North Portland.

Downtown Portland

701 SW 6th Ave
Portland, OR 97205
Drive time from Downtown Portland: 0 minutes.

Hit some food carts, walk on the waterfront, take a ride on some electric scooters, or go for a lift on the OHSU tram. There are so many fun things to do downtown and you can easily plan a fun engagement session with a lot of variety that highlights the city you love.

Engagement Session Locations near Portland

Cannon Beach

Cannon Beach, OR 97110
Drive time from Downtown Portland: 1 hour and 25 minutes.

One of my favorite places to be is near the ocean and the Oregon Coast is a beauty. Cannon Beach makes it easy for engagement photos whether you want to be in the shadow of Haystack Rock or overlooking the beach from Ecola State Park. The beach gets busy on the weekends, especially in Summer, but weekdays or off season are great times to shoot. Here are some photos from a recent engagement session at Cannon Beach.

Trillium Lake

Government Camp, OR 97028
Drive time from Downtown Portland: 1 hour and 23 minutes.

Trillium Lake offers one of the easiest and prettiest views of Mt Hood in the area. The lake is easy to get to from Portland and on a clear day visitors are treated to an amazing mountain reflection in the water. Walk the small trail that loops around the lake or rent a kayak for some super cute and adventurous photos.

Silver Falls State Park

20024 Silver Falls Hwy SE
Sublimity, OR 97385
Drive time from Downtown Portland: 1 hour and 6 minutes.

Silver Falls State Park is considered the jewel of the Oregon State Park system and for good reason. This lush dreamscape is home to 10 waterfalls (you can do a hike that hits all of them!) and some great hiking trails.

Mt Hood Elopement

A few days later and I’m still daydreaming about this beautiful Mt Hood Elopement. I worked with these two to find an alpine location that had a view of Mt. Hood but wasn’t too difficult of a hike for their guests and older parents. Leading up to their wedding day, we weren’t too sure what condition the forest roads would be in or if the trail would still be covered in snow. I often scout locations beforehand (even if I’ve already been there) just to make sure and thankfully the snow had melted just enough by late June to give us the green light.

We met at the trailhead where the bride changed into her dress tucked away behind pine trees. After a quick first look, we all applied sunscreen and hit the trail. Once at the top we were treated to a 360 degree view and a glimpse of all the mountains (Adams, St. Helens, Rainier, and Jefferson!).

Surrounded by their 10 guests, their best friend officiated their short but sweet ceremony with a majestic, snow covered Mount Hood in the background. Following their heartfelt vows, we popped a bottle of champagne and toasted to the newlyweds.

After their ceremony we said our goodbyes to the mountain and made our way back down the trail stopping along the way for portraits.

It was such a great day and I’m so happy that I could be part of it. Documenting intimate moments like this really does make my dreams come true.

Planning a Mount Hood Elopement

Picking the best time of year for your mountain elopement depends on a few factors but mostly it has to do with weather and the feel you want your photos to have.

Weather

While it’s only 1.5 hours away, Mt Hood is a wild place and the conditions can vary greatly and change quickly from those at lower elevations. Typically most trails are free of snow between July to September but this changes every year relative to how big or small the winter was. I suggest waiting until mid Summer to take advantage of open trails and higher elevations.

Atmosphere

What you want your photos to look like will depend on the time of day and general atmosphere. Are you going for that moody, cloudy PNW feel or do you want a summer feel complete with a 9PM sunset?  Weather, time of day, and location is all going to impact how your photos look.

Mt Hood Wedding Locations

Choosing your ceremony location for your elopement or small wedding really depends on how many guests will attend and how much hiking you’re comfortable doing.

Trillium Lake

You can pretty much drive right up to this place. It’s easy and one of the most accessible locations for a nice view of Mt. Hood. On a calm day the mountain reflection on the water is amazing. There’s a forest trail that loops around the lake and a nice little dock too.

Since it’s so easy to get to it’s also very popular. I suggest waking up early and exchanging your vows at sunrise.

In the winter the main gate off Highway 26 closes but you can still access the lake by snowshoe.

Mirror Lake

The trailhead for Mirror Lake is located just off Highway 26 and it’s just under 2 miles from the parking lot to the lake itself. The trail is well graded and is partially paved. If you’re looking to hike a bit more it’s possible to add on a longer nearby hike to get a higher elevation view of the mountain. This place fills up fast in the summer especially on the weekends so plan on arriving early.

Timberline Lodge

An easy location if you’re interested in a snowy, winter elopement. The road is often cleared between snow storms and the amenities of the lodge are hard to beat.

In the summer it’s a great access point to some trails on the slopes of the mountain.

Hike-in Locations

Aside from these popular spots I spend my time scanning maps and exploring great locations that can sometimes be off the beaten path. If you’re interested in something more adventurous, let me know and we can find the perfect spot for your intimate wedding. Whether you want something a little less busy, a longer hike, or a backpacking elopement, the Mt. Hood Wilderness has a lot of great options.

Getting Married in Portland, Oregon

Congratulations! If you’re reading this you probably just got engaged and are stepping foot into the exciting and overwhelming world of wedding planning. It’s a lot to take in at once so I put together this useful guide to getting married in Portland, Oregon. I hope it helps to answer questions and provide tips on when to book your wedding venue, Portland wedding vendor recommendations, where your out-of-town guests should stay, how to organize your wedding timeline and family groupings, and so much more.

When to book your venue and hire your wedding vendors

Wedding Venues in Portland

Choosing your wedding venue and booking a date for your wedding is the first thing you should start to think about. If you have a date in mind for your wedding you will want to make sure that there are wedding venues available. Many venues will be booked at least a year or two in advance so make sure you keep that in mind when choosing your date.

Since it’s more common to have a wedding on a Saturday or Sunday some wedding venues may offer discounts for weekday weddings and have greater availability.

Getting married at a city park or other city managed properties may also be cheaper than a traditional wedding venue.

These are some of my favorite outdoor wedding venues in Portland. I’m also a big fan of backyard house weddings.

Photographers

Once you have your wedding date set and your venue picked you can begin to reach out to other wedding vendors to see if they have your date available. As a wedding photographer, I’m usually booked within 6 months to 1 year of a wedding date but sometimes I’ll have events booked 2 years in advance. Every booking season is a little different so it’s always a good idea to connect with vendors early and start exploring the next steps. Here is a list of questions to ask your photographer. You can view my wedding photography work here.

Portland Wedding Planners

I love working with wedding planners! They are such a great part of the team and I’ve seen how helpful they can be for couples in planning their day. Hiring a wedding planner or day-of coordinator lets you enjoy your day without having to manage a thing.

Should we take Engagement Photos?

Taking engagement photos is a great way for you and your partner to get comfortable being in front of the camera and for you to get to know your wedding photographer. The photos themselves can also be used to announce the day to friends and family. One way that people do this is to send out Save the Dates. These are typically sent 6 months before the wedding day which means if you want to do an engagement session you should schedule that with enough time to get your photos back and printed before you have to mail your Save the Dates out.

My normal turn around from engagement shoot to final edited photos is 3 to 4 weeks and I’m always happy to turn around a handful of images for you to pick from if you are in a hurry and short on time.

Booking an engagement session is of course not a requirement to build rapport with your wedding photographer and get great wedding photos. I meet many of my clients for the first time on their wedding day and still get great photos.

Check out my list of great Portland engagement photo locations. These are some of my favorite spots for sessions in town.

When and How to get a Marriage License in Portland

Multnomah County (the county that Portland is in) issues licenses for ceremonies that take place anywhere within the State of Oregon. Normally licenses need to be arranged in person at least 3 days before your wedding date but due to Covid licenses can be arranged via mail. Your license is valid for 60 days.

If you won’t be in the Portland area prior to your wedding, check with the county clerk where you will be getting married to make sure you know all of their requirements beforehand.

Your officiant will need to return the license to the county within 5 days of the wedding ceremony.

How to build your wedding day timeline to get the best wedding photos

Seeing as your wedding photos (and video if you’re going that route) are the things that you will have leftover after all the festivities are done, it makes sense to setup your day in a way that gets the nicest results for your photos but also lets you enjoy your day in a stress-free way.

If possible try to have your ceremony in a shady spot so that you and your partner aren’t in the bright, hot sun. This keeps you comfortable and also makes for more flattering photos. Alternatively you can wait until the sun is a little lower and behind your ceremony location.

I work with all my clients to help pick the best time for certain photos and I can be as hand-on as wanted in helping to build your timeline.

Sample Wedding Timeline

I put together a blog post that breaks down each part of the wedding day as it relates to wedding photography. I included how long each of those parts of the day take me and the best time of day for them to take place. Check out this sample wedding timeline and access an editable copy.

Formal Family Photo Groupings

Below is a list that is by no means comprehensive but serves as a good start for most wedding day family photo groupings. The larger the groupings the longer this time of the day will take. Keep in mind that time has a way of slowing down when people who haven’t seen each other for awhile get together and start catching up. With years and years of experience photographing weddings, I’m comfortable taking charge in a direct but not pushy way to make family portraits happen easily and quickly. I can finish most family photo lists in 20 to 30 minutes.

Couple Portraits on your Wedding Day

What if my partner and I aren’t comfortable in front of the camera?

It’s gonna be ok! Most couples feel this way. Being in front of a camera can be a weird place to be and it’s completely normal to feel awkward. I work with all my couples to provide plenty of direction and I never put you in poses that feel super posey or uncomfortable. If you think you might need more practice, an engagement session is a great way to have a trial run. You can also let me know if you have a “better side” or if there are things about yourself that you’re not super comfortable with in photos. We all have those and we’ll work together to get photos you’re into.

How long do couple portraits take on a wedding day?

How much or how little time you spend taking couple portraits on your wedding day is completely up to you. Some couples want multiple round of portraits throughout the day and in different locations. Other couples want to focus on enjoying their time with friends and family. Over the years I’ve gotten really good at maximizing time and shooting great couple portraits in 15 to 20 minutes. To me photographing weddings is a balance between taking beautiful photos and not making your entire day feel like a photoshoot. I never want you to miss out on wedding day moments.

How long does it take to get wedding photos back?

Following your wedding day I know that you’re excited to tell the world about your day and share photos on social media. This is why I go home and edit a small handful of photos to share with you as a sneak peek within 24 hours. I then deliver your remaining edited wedding photos to you through an online gallery within 3 to 4 weeks of your wedding day. I know that you are excited to see them and I’m excited to share them with you. Waiting 6 to 8 weeks or even longer just doesn’t cut it.

That’s a wrap.

Phew. That was a lot of info but I hope that it was helpful! As I mentioned above, if you have any questions about any of this info please complete the contact form below and I’d be happy to chat.
